The holiday season is just beginning and although I am a staunch believer on NOT decorating or listening to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving, as soon as Friday came the decorations were up and the music was playing. Even though I don’t see south Florida being a “marshmallow world” anytime soon, it is still a blast to get into the spirit of the holiday. Personally, my wife and I are more into it this year than normal, because we are experiencing a fuller home this holiday season with the addition of foster children into our care. I am continually amazed to see the look on a child’s face when they understand that life does not have to be like what they have been exposed to thus far; that it can be filled with visions of sugar plums dancing (though I’m not so sure that’s a good dream either) and Santa making weird noises on the roof. And we are not alone; it is very common at this point to focus attention on giving back.
The majority of employers out there are not like Clark Griswold’s boss in Christmas Vacation, giving their employees a subscription to the jelly of the month club. Many employers still believe in giving special holiday bonuses and treats to their employees who have worked hard throughout the year, yet decisions like that often come with hesitation and trepidation. Spending money at the end of the year can be a tricky thing for a business. The timing is short, often there are lots of other things and distractions going on and with the general busy-ness of the end of the year, the concept of spending money on your business at year’s end can seem like a lot of hassle. But are you aware of the advantage?
The Advantage of Putting Money Back Into Your Business
As many of the businesses we work with know, the end of the year is a great time to reflect on the successes of the past 12 months, study what worked and make an investment in your business and your future success before the end of the year.
How to Put Money Back Into Your Business
This can be done in multiple ways. Ultimately, Frank Shirley (Clark Griswold’s boss) saw the benefits of using that excess money to appreciate and motivate his employee base, despite his initial shortcomings (and jelly cravings). Year-end bonuses started for this very reason. It is also a popular time to upgrade supplies, furniture, and even new websites among a long list of other wish-list items that every business owner has. As long as you don’t “sit on a throne of lies” as Will Ferrell’s character Buddy says in Elf, there can be a lot to look forward to during the holidays. So, unless you are in south Florida, it’s time to start dreaming of that white Christmas!
