What Is An SSL Certificate And How Does It Relate To SEO?

Author: Harry Casimir

While browsing the web, you’ve likely come across a site with a little green lock in the URL at the top of your browser. Seeing this lock means that you’re in a safe spot on the web; the site you’re on is secured by SSL. But what does that mean, and how does it impact search engine optimization (SEO)?

What is SSL?

SSL (short for Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol used to encrypt data sent to and from a server when someone accesses your website. When your site is encrypted with SSL, the URL will begin with https instead of http.

Without SSL, anyone could read sensitive data sent through your website — including usernames, passwords, credit card information, or form submissions. Needless to say, these are private pieces of data meant only for you and your users.

With SSL enabled, however, the user can access your site securely through https. The data becomes encrypted, so both you and your visitors can rest easy knowing their information is safe from hackers and malicious parties.

How Does SSL Affect SEO?

One of the biggest questions for business owners is how SSL ties into SEO. While SSL protects user data, it doesn’t block your ability to use Google Analytics or other tracking tools. You’ll still see site visits and behavior data.

In fact, Google has confirmed that websites with SSL certificates receive a slight ranking boost in search results. While adding SSL alone won’t instantly move you to the top of page one, it does give your website a competitive advantage over sites that remain unsecured. And in today’s competitive digital marketing landscape, every small boost counts.

What is Involved in Getting an SSL Certificate?

To secure your site with SSL, you need to purchase and install a certificate on your hosting service. SSL certificates usually cost between $100–$500, though prices vary depending on the provider. Certificates also expire (generally after one year), so they must be renewed regularly to keep your site protected.

Why Should You Implement SSL?

Beyond added security and a slight SEO boost, there are plenty of reasons to add SSL to your website:

  • User Trust: The green lock icon builds trust, making visitors more likely to stay and convert.

  • Data Integrity: SSL helps verify that your server is connected to the correct website and prevents tampering from hackers or third parties.

  • Referrer Data: SSL helps preserve referrer information, giving you better insights into where your web traffic comes from.

Perhaps the most important reason: Google recommends it. As the leading search engine in the world, Google prioritizes secure websites in rankings. By enabling SSL, you’re not just improving your SEO — you’re creating a safer, more reliable browsing experience for your users.
